October 2025 – In the age of innovation and digitalization, the Philippines is among the world’s top freelancing countries with over 1.5 million active freelancers.
And despite the allure of becoming a freelancer offers – flexible work hours, attractive pay, passion-based work – many people still struggle with the downsides of the gig economy.
In EastWest Ageas’ digital series, #FYP (For Your PURPLE), Thea shares her struggles of being a freelancer. But with the support of her friends, she knows she has it in her to fulfill her dream of becoming a homeowner.
The great news is, there are ways to make sure one can avoid becoming a frazzled freelancer and be a flourishing one instead.
1.) Package your services well
The gig economy is lucrative but that also means you face a lot of competition offering services the same as yours. Make sure you stand out with a strong portfolio showcasing the best of your work. And if you can, add client testimonials to become an even more credible option.
2.) Make personal and online contacts
Connections matter and you can build those, both online and IRL. Use your own network or friends and family to build your base, and at the same time, go online with work marketplaces and job sites.
3.) Know how much to charge
Price your services honestly and start with the industry base. Check on the usual rates in the industry and benchmark from there. Avoid overpricing which will alienate you from potential clients, but never underprice yourself. Clients will pay for good work at the end of the day.
4.) Always work with a contract
A contract is your greatest ally as a freelancer. This will guide your service level to deliver such as deadlines and revisions, freeing you from the risks of doing too much for a client. Clear communication is necessary in effectively negotiating the terms and conditions that will satisfy both you and your client.
5.) Plan for yourself
Freelancers typically do not have any employee benefits such as health insurance. Thus many freelancers often do not have the protections in place if an emergency arises. Empower yourself with protection by getting your own health or life insurance, so you’re prepared for the unknown.
Just like Thea, the challenges of being a freelancer shouldn’t hinder you from bravely pursuing your dreams and goals. All it takes is belief in your self, the support of your people, and planning to help you build your better tomorrow.
